Do Flies Count Sheep or NMDA Receptors to Go to Sleep?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The drive to sleep increases the longer that we stay awake, but this process is poorly understood at the cellular level. Now, Liu et al. show that the plasticity of a small group of neurons in the Drosophila central brain is a key component of the sleep homeostat.

Assessment of the role of NMDA receptors located in hippocampal CA1 area on the effects of oral morphine dependency on spatial learning and memory in rat
Introduction: It has been reported that oral morphine dependency facilitated formation of spatial learning and memory. In the present study the role of NMDA receptors located in hippocampal CA1 area of morphine dependent rats was studied. Methods: Male rats were divided into 4 groups. Two cannulae were stereotaxically implanted bilaterally into the hippocampal CA1 area. After 5 days recover...
متن کاملAsymmetric Involvement of Central and the Peripheral NMDA Glutamate Receptors in the Expression of Withdrawal Syndrome in Morphine-Dependent Mice
Introduction: Morphine withdrawal syndrome is mediated via several central and peripheral neurological pathways. In the present study we investigated the role of N-methyl-D aspartic acid (NMDA) glutamate receptor on naloxone-induced withdrawal syndrome in morphine-conditioned mice. Materials and Methods: We designed two separate experiments. In experiment one, 30 male NMRI mice were divide...
متن کاملThe NMDA Receptor Promotes Sleep in the Fruit Fly, Drosophila melanogaster
Considerable evidence indicates that sleep is essential for learning and memory. Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as a novel model for studying sleep. We previously found a short sleeper mutant, fumin (fmn), and identified its mutation in the dopamine transporter gene. We reported similarities in the molecular basis of sleep and arousal regulation between mammals and Drosophila. In aversive ...
متن کاملThe antinociceptive effect of 17β-estradiol in the nucleus paragigantocellularis lateralis of male rats may be mediated by the NMDA receptors
Introduction: The nucleus paragigantocellularis lateralis (LPGi) is involved in the descending pain modulation. The neurostreoid, 17β-estradiol found in the PGi nucleus and modulates nociception by binding to estrogen receptors and also by allosteric interaction with NMDA receptors. In this study, the role of NMDA receptors in the 17β-estradiol-induced pain modulation was investig...
متن کاملبررسی تأثیر محرومیت از بینایی طی دوره بحرانی تکامل مغز بر بیان زیرواحدهای گیرنده NMDA در هیپوکامپ موش صحرایی
Background and purpose: Visual deprivation during critical period of brain development impairs structure and function of NMDA receptors in visual cortex. Parts of visual signals go to the hippocampus through the visual cortex. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the effects of visual deprivation during critical period of brain development on NMDA receptor subunits expression in rats’ h...
